Introduction
Why do some people experience repeated failure despite hard work? Why do others struggle with recurring bad dreams, unexplained fear, stagnation, family conflicts, or persistent setbacks that seem to defy logical explanation?
These are questions many people ask when faced with challenges that appear to have deeper roots than what can be seen on the surface.
The Bible teaches that life is not only physical but also spiritual. Behind many visible circumstances are unseen spiritual realities. Scripture reminds us that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers…” (Ephesians 6:12). The Christian understanding of spiritual warfare is based on the belief that believers face an ongoing spiritual battle that affects various aspects of life.
n this article, we will explore what spiritual problems are, some of their hidden causes, and the biblical solutions God has provided for victory.
What Are Spiritual Problems?
Spiritual problems are difficulties that affect a person’s spiritual well-being and relationship with God. They may also manifest in other areas of life such as health, finances, relationships, emotions, or personal progress.
Not every problem is spiritual in origin. Some challenges result from poor decisions, natural circumstances, or the actions of other people. However, Scripture also teaches that there is a real spiritual battle between God’s kingdom and forces that oppose His purposes.
Spiritual problems may include:
- Persistent fear and anxiety
- Oppressive or disturbing dreams
- Repeated patterns of failure
- Strong temptations and addictions
- Unexplainable discouragement
- Chronic spiritual dryness
- Persistent attacks against one’s faith
- Generational negative patterns
Signs That a Problem May Have a Spiritual Dimension
While every challenge should be examined carefully, some signs may indicate a spiritual component.
1. Repeated Negative Patterns
When the same type of setback occurs repeatedly despite genuine efforts to change, it may be wise to seek God’s guidance and prayerfully examine possible spiritual causes.
2. Persistent Spiritual Opposition
Many believers report experiencing unusual resistance when pursuing spiritual growth, prayer, ministry, or obedience to God. Christian teaching often identifies this as part of spiritual warfare.
3. Unusual Fear and Oppression
A continual sense of fear, condemnation, or hopelessness that pushes a person away from God may require spiritual attention alongside practical and emotional support.
4. Constant Temptation in One Area
The enemy often attacks areas of weakness. A recurring struggle with a particular sin may indicate a spiritual battle requiring intentional prayer and discipleship.
Hidden Causes of Spiritual Problems
1. Sin and Disobedience
Sin creates distance between us and God. When we knowingly continue in disobedience, we may open doors to spiritual weakness.
Isaiah 59:2 says: “Your iniquities have separated you from your God.”
This does not mean every hardship is caused by sin, but unrepented sin can hinder spiritual growth.
2. Lack of Spiritual Knowledge
Hosea 4:6 states: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
Many believers suffer unnecessarily because they are unaware of God’s promises and spiritual principles.
3. Unforgiveness
Unforgiveness can become a spiritual stronghold that affects emotional and spiritual health.
Ask yourself:
- Is there someone I need to forgive?
- Am I holding on to bitterness?
- Have I released past hurts to God?
4. Wrong Associations
The people we surround ourselves with influence our spiritual lives.
1 Corinthians 15:33 warns: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
5. Spiritual Attacks
The Bible teaches that Satan seeks to oppose God’s purposes and discourage believers. Christians are therefore instructed to remain spiritually alert and equipped with God’s armor.
6. Generational Patterns
Some families experience recurring destructive patterns that continue across generations.
These may include:
- Addiction
- Violence
- Occult involvement
- Chronic family breakdown
Through Christ, believers have authority to break free from every ungodly pattern.
Biblical Solutions to Spiritual Problems
1. Surrender Completely to Jesus Christ
The greatest solution to spiritual problems begins with salvation.
Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
A relationship with Christ provides the foundation for spiritual victory.
2. Develop a Consistent Prayer Life
Prayer connects us with God’s power and guidance.
Practical prayer habits include:
- Daily personal prayer
- Thanksgiving
- Repentance
- Intercession
- Spiritual warfare prayers
3. Study and Apply God’s Word
The Word of God is described as the “sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17).
Reading Scripture daily helps believers identify deception and stand firm in faith. The Bible repeatedly presents God’s Word as a key weapon in spiritual warfare.
4. Put On the Full Armor of God
Ephesians 6:10-18 teaches believers to wear:
- Belt of Truth
- Breastplate of Righteousness
- Shoes of Peace
- Shield of Faith
- Helmet of Salvation
- Sword of the Spirit
These spiritual resources help Christians stand against spiritual opposition.
5. Practice Fasting
Fasting helps believers focus on God and strengthen spiritual discipline.
6. Join a Bible-Believing Community
Isolation often weakens believers.
Healthy Christian fellowship provides:
- Encouragement
- Accountability
- Prayer support
- Spiritual growth
7. Walk in Obedience
Victory is not merely about praying against problems; it also involves obeying God’s instructions daily.

My Personal Spiritual Battle
My life has been full of Spiritual battles. Initially I kept on saying to myself: What have I done wrong? Who did I offend? But today I give glory to God for allowing me to pass through such nasty spiritual warfare and making me victorious up till today.
(Psalm 34:19) Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivers him out of them all.
In this testimony I will just give you an instance out of many warfare experiences I have.
About 15 years ago, I was the Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in the Polytechnic I was Lecturing.
Back then both the academic and administrative responsibilities were saddled on me.
Among the non-teaching staff of the Department, a staff who was a Lady came and reported another junior staff under her to me and said this man was playing truancy. She said the man will come in the morning and leave after sometimes thereby leaving all the work for her.
I called the man to order.
However, he continued his truancy. So I asked him where he went since morning without permission. He said he went to the hospital. I asked him to go back to the hospital and produce medical report of his ailment else he will be queried. He was supposed to bring the medical report the following day.
However, when I closed from work and got home, after some times in my room my eyes started turning, all objects around me were moving in circle. I was pressed to go to toilet and great heat enveloped me.
I managed to send one of my children to call my wife. I could not talk again but only motioning with my hands.
My life was ebbing away!
I was in between the land of the living and the land of the dead. In that state I could see who was killing me so to speak. It was the same man in the office I rebuked and asked to bring his medical report the following day
I had learn how to pray self deliverance prayer. You can also read this Post
I started praying in my heart, I cold not talk again. No one new I was praying.
The wonder was that I started getting strong and stronger until I could talk audibly and I continue the prayer until I got full consciousness.
That was my first time I encountered the spirit of death and hell.
The Lord saved me. Praise God!
